By Breaking Belize News Staff: The Government of Belize has firmly rejected sanctions imposed by the People’s Republic of China against Foreign Minister Francis Fonseca, declaring that the measures will neither influence Belize’s foreign policy nor weaken its longstanding diplomatic relationship with Taiwan.
In an official statement issued at 11:40 a.m. on Monday, October 12, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs defended Belize’s sovereign right to determine its international relationships without external interference or pressure.
The Ministry emphasized that Belize’s diplomatic relationship with Taiwan was established through an independent national decision and has delivered significant benefits in healthcare, education, infrastructure, agriculture, environmental protection and development.
It further stressed that Fonseca was carrying out his official responsibilities under the instructions of the Government of Belize and in the country’s national interest.
“Measures directed at an individual for carrying out the lawful duties of his office are unwarranted, and we reject them,” the Ministry declared.
China announced the sanctions earlier Monday, ordering the freezing of any assets Fonseca may hold in China, prohibiting Chinese organizations and individuals from conducting business with him, and barring him from entering mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau.
Beijing accused Fonseca of supporting Taiwan and undermining China’s sovereignty and national interests. Similar sanctions were imposed against Paraguay’s Communications Minister Gustavo Villate. Both countries are among Taiwan’s remaining 12 diplomatic allies.
The diplomatic confrontation follows a recent visit to Belize by Taiwanese Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung, during which the two countries signed new cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening bilateral relations.
Despite Beijing’s actions, Belize has made clear that its foreign policy will remain unchanged.
“The Government of Belize continues to stand fully behind Minister Fonseca,” the Ministry stated.
Belize also reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful international relations and dialogue, while calling on countries to refrain from unilateral coercive measures against foreign officials.
The Ministry indicated that Belize will consult with regional and international partners regarding the development and keep the Belizean public informed.
