Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube has condemned a fake news article circulating on social media alleging that the National Senior Certificate (NSC) English Paper 3 examination paper has been leaked.
The department said the baseless claims were intended to disrupt the examination process and prejudice more than 900 000 candidates.
Nearly one million matriculants began writing their final NSC examinations across the country on Tuesday.
“This deliberate spread of disinformation during this critical period is irresponsible and undermines the preparation and aspirations of learners across the country,” said Basic Education Department spokesperson Lukhanyo Vangqa.
Department confirms exam security measures
Gwarube visited Tembisa West Secondary School on Thursday morning to monitor the writing of English Paper 3.
During the visit, she said strict security measures were in place to protect the integrity of the examinations.
“She can confirm that the stringent examination security systems were operating smoothly, with no leaks or other irregularities reported across all provinces,” Vangqa said.
Fake news poster to be reported to law enforcement
Vangqa said the department would report the fake news poster to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution.
He said the claims undermined the national social contract between the department and South Africans regarding the NSC examinations.
“The public is urged not to fall for or circulate unverified information intended to create panic and disrupt learners.”
