Robert Griffin III has not played an NFL snap since 2020, and has not started more than one game of an NFL season in a literal decade. In the years since his playing days, Griffin has built a pretty solid career as an analyst, currently serving alongside play-by-play man Connor Onion in the network’s No. 2 college football booth.
But despite his more than extended absence from the NFL and the steady work he has found since hanging up his cleats, Griffin remains committed to teasing his potential return to the pros.
Speaking as a guest on The Dan Patrick Show on Friday, Griffin indicated that a comeback may be in the works.
“Things are percolating there Dan, let’s just put it that way,” he said when asked about his teases. “I’m pretty content, very happy. I’m a girl-dad of four. Got a very happy life. Love my wife. Enjoying life to the fullest. And then all these quarterbacks started going down. So I’m sitting there like, ‘Well, I could probably go play better than Cooper Rush, and better than this dude over here.'”
Griffin went on to say that he believes he could work in any system, citing the growth he’s made watching film while working as an analyst. Asked directly if he was better than Deshaun Watson right now, Griffin sidestepped.
Patrick pressed further, asking if Griffin was better than current Ravens backup Tyler Huntley—notable as Griffin was also a backup for the Ravens at the end of his career. Again, Griffin refused to answer.
“I’m not giving you any of that. I’m not giving you any of that,” he said.
“What I would say is that there have been some conversations that have been happening and I’m very happy at Fox Sports. I’m very happy with what I’m doing. It would have to be the right opportunity to get me to go do that again. We’ll see if it pops up. But I’m very happy at Fox Sports. They treat me well. I love my team. We’re having a good time. And I’m not going to sacrifice that just to try to make headlines.”

Griffin has teased a potential comeback quite a bit this year, having compared himself favorably to Cooper Rush earlier in the season as the Atlanta Falcons struggled to open the season without their top two quarterback options in Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. healthy.
“When Cooper Rush and Jack Strand are stinking it up in Atlanta it makes zero sense that QBs like Cam Newton, Jimmy Garoppolo, Ryan Tannehill and myself aren’t the veteran presence in the room to stabilize teams when their QB goes down,” Griffin wrote in a social media post.
Given how long it’s been since Griffin was in the league, it still feels like a pretty extreme stretch for him to actually make a comeback. That said, after Philip Rivers came back to finish out the season for the Indianapolis Colts last year, it’s fair to argue that the NFL as a whole has reached “never say never” territory with regard to quarterbacks.
