Marampa Mines has announced plans to temporarily suspend operations, citing difficult market conditions, high freight and operating costs, and ongoing operational challenges affecting the sustainability of its business.
The company disclosed that it had submitted a notice of temporary suspension of operations to the Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources as part of its ongoing restructuring initiative, known as the Marampa Reset.
In an internal communication to employees, the company said the decision was aimed at protecting its long-term future by establishing a stronger and more sustainable operational foundation before pursuing further growth.
Marampa Mines said that despite improvements made since its September 22 business update, external pressures had made additional measures necessary to safeguard the business.
During the suspension, the company intends to retain a minimum workforce to protect its mining licence, maintain essential services and safeguard its assets. Critical activities, including safety and security, essential power supply, tailings and water management, environmental protection, and necessary maintenance, will continue.
The company said the measures would help keep the mine ready to resume production when market conditions improve, supported by an operational structure and cost base that would allow it to operate profitably and sustainably.
Management is also preparing a controlled shutdown-readiness plan outlining how operations will be safely suspended, which activities will continue, and the staffing and working arrangements required throughout the period.
Marampa Mines further disclosed that high fuel costs had constrained its ability to secure additional fuel supplies, requiring the company to conserve available stocks to sustain essential services during the suspension.
It added that the timing of production changes would depend on regulatory requirements and the site’s readiness, with further communication and departmental briefings expected once the shutdown plan has been finalised.
The company also confirmed that its ongoing organisational restructuring would continue as part of the broader Marampa Reset, emphasising that the changes would apply across all levels of the business, beginning with leadership accountability.
Employees directly affected by the restructuring will be informed through their respective Heads of Department and the Human Resources department.
Acknowledging the potential impact of the decisions on workers and their families, Marampa Mines said it remained committed to maintaining clear communication and treating affected employees with dignity and respect throughout the process.
The company urged employees to continue carrying out their assigned duties and following existing work schedules until further notice, while using fuel and other materials carefully.
