By Zoila Palma: Today, El Cayo, now known as San Ignacio and Santa Elena Towns and Benque Viejo del Carmen mark 122 years since they were officially declared towns on October 19, 1904.
The historic communities in western Belize have played important roles in the country’s development, preserving rich cultural traditions and histories that continue to shape the identity of their residents.
On October 19, 1904, the then Governor officially designated El Cayo and Benque Viejo del Carmen as towns through a notice published in the Government Gazette.
The recognition marked an important milestone in the development of the two communities, which grew from settlements into established commercial centers.
Historian and former government minister Hector Silva has long helped preserve the history of these communities and encourage younger generations to appreciate their roots.
In previous years, the anniversary provided an opportunity for schoolchildren to learn about life in El Cayo and Benque Viejo before modern technology transformed daily living.
Students explored how their predecessors travelled, attended school and carried out everyday activities, gaining a greater understanding of how life has changed over the decades.
Historical site visits also formed part of past commemorations, allowing students to connect with the places and stories that shaped their communities.
These activities helped bridge the gap between generations while encouraging pride in local history.
Residents and families can still mark the occasion by sharing historical accounts, visiting heritage sites and teaching children about the people and events that contributed to the towns’ development.
Through passing on these stories and safeguarding our rich cultural traditions, families and educators can keep the history and cultural identity of western Belize alive for future generations.
