The Washington Commanders and New York Giants both ended Week 5 with a disappointing result — a 27-27 tie.
Both teams got well within field-goal range with chances to win the game in overtime. However, both teams found a way to blow those chances.
Giants running back Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball while fighting for extra yardage to set up a game-winning kick for New York. The Commanders then worked their way into field-goal range, but an ill-advised scramble from quarterback Jayden Daniels saw the clock run out on the 10-minute overtime period.
Washington ran the play with 12 seconds left on the clock and no timeouts. Instead of spiking the ball or throwing it out bounds, they did the one thing that could keep them from attempting a game-winning kick.
ESPN broadcast analyst Stephen A. Smith believes this mistake brings the franchise one step closer to firing head coach Dan Quinn.
"Bottom line, this is on the head coach. That just can't happen" Smith said on Monday. "Dan Quinn it was nice knowing you as head coach for the Washington Commanders. This will be your last season here. You will not be the head coach for the Washington Commanders next season."
Quinn took the blame for Sunday's late-game mistake when speaking to reporters postgame.
“The sequencing of that does not fall on [Daniels],” Quinn said. “It's an outside throw or a clock — an out of bounds throw, or a clock. That has to come from me. I have to put him in that spot. I can do that earlier and we can finish the kick earlier. We don't need to gain more yards.”

The Commanders are now 1-3-1 as they turn their attention toward next week's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.
