Daisy Edgar-Jones is in her Austen era. The “Normal People” breakout star leads the cast of filmmaker Georgia Oakley’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s first novel, “Sense and Sensibility,” which hits theaters Friday. Throughout her press tour, Edgar-Jones’s wardrobe theme has been consistent: this is a modern Austen heroine.
Working closely with stylist Dani Michelle, Edgar-Jones’s promotional tour wardrobe featured designs by Vivienne Westwood, Miu Miu and vintage pieces from Armani Privé and Chloé. WWD takes a closer look and breaks down the visual language of Daisy Edgar-Jones’ “Sense and Sensibility” dresses ahead.
Period-Specific Styling in Vivienne Westwood
Edgar-Jones kicked off her “Sense and Sensibility” press tour with the film’s premiere in London, sporting some British luxury threads courtesy of Andreas Kronthaler for Vivienne Westwood. The dress was crafted in a champagne silk duchesse fabric with a plunging V-shaped neckline and fitted bodice.
An asymmetric bubble hemline with a flowing train added a touch of modernity to Edgar-Jones’s dress. The gown merged a sense of contemporary style with nods to period drama, including a fitted bodice with a plunging neckline and the fabric itself.
Edgar-Jones also wore an agate pendant from Boucheron‘s archive. The piece was made in 1877 and featured a gold-framed portrait at the base with delicate jewels outlining the frame. As her first red carpet look for the press tour, Edgar-Jones made the theme of her wardrobe clear: this was an Austen heroine circa 2026.
Elevated Elegance in Armani Privé
Less than a week later, Edgar-Jones set off for Berlin, where she wore a vintage gown from the spring 2005 collection of Giorgio Armani Privé. This silky dress took on romance with a sleek approach, cast in ivory with statement silver pieces at the shoulders.
Acting almost as a frame for the actress, the silver embellishments were crafted with draping and long tassels. The design created a cutout, cape-like effect, amplifying the more than $50K worth of Boucheron jewelry Edgar-Jones wore to accessorize.
Modern Romance in Miu Miu
By October, Edgar-Jones went full romance, wearing a custom Miu Miu gown for the Sydney premiere of the film. The sleeveless dress included delicate details like ribbons tied at the shoulders for straps.
The bodice featured a sheer fabric that highlighted the peekaboo bra layering element at the bust. A silver sequin-encrusted corset remained slightly undone on the dress, while the flowing skirt, crafted entirely in sheer fabric featured shimmering embellishments that elevated the romantic style.
Out of most of her red carpet “Sense and Sensibility” style moments, the Miu Miu dress may have been the actress’ most outright interpretation of modern romance.
Sensible Style in Chloé
For the Stateside leg of her “Sense and Sensibility” promotional tour, Edgar-Jones turned to Chloé‘s spring 1999 collection. Then under the creative direction of Stella McCartney, the gown felt closest to Jane Austen’s world, save for some ’90s-inspired elements.
The dress was structured with a silk-corseted bodice in a pale shade of bone with wispy appliqués in red and blue. Semi-sheer sleeves with botanical embroidery added further dimension to the gown. A silk gunmetal skirt contrasted the bodice and flowed from the corseted element to the arrival carpet, with a liquid effect that created a puddle of material trailing behind Edgar-Jones.
“Sense and Sensibility” follows sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood, played by Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles, who navigate romance and sisterhood after their prospects suddenly change. The film hits theaters Friday.
