The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government mobilise all relevant private, state and federal health agencies to be on high alert to contain the outbreak and spread of Ebola.
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) had on Tuesday, confirmed a single case of the disease involving a woman who reportedly arrived Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city from Uganda.
The House has also urged the government, through the Federal Ministry of Finance, to as a matter of urgency release all outstanding appropriated funds to relevant health agencies to enable them effectively handle the discharge of their responsibilities.
It further called on the Ministry and the NCDC to immediately assess the expected timely released fund to strengthen the country’s preparedness and response capacity for the disease, in line with current epidemiological evidence and public health guidance.
The resolution was fallout of a motion, sponsored under matters of urgent public importance on Wednesday by Amobi Ogah on the need for the Nigerian government to strengthen preventive and emergency medical measures against the spread of Ebola.
“It is extremely disturbing that yesterday, 20th October, 2026, an Ebola Virus case was confirmed in a woman arriving from Uganda in Abuja who tested positive. Health authorities traced 44 contacts for isolation and further tests.
“Any delay in identifying suspected cases, conducting appropriate laboratory investigations, isolating confirmed cases, tracing contacts, or providing timely medical care could increase the risk of transmission and place additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system,” he said.
