Dibrugarh, Oct 14: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday inspected the under-construction Assam Legislative Assembly complex at Khanikar in Dibrugarh and reviewed its progress, with the project targeted for completion within 30 months.
Spread over around 63 bighas, the complex will house the Assembly building, an MLA hostel, an auditorium, a secretariat block and other supporting infrastructure. The project is part of the state government’s plan to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital.
Sarma said around 20 per cent of the piling work had been completed, while boundary wall construction had also progressed. He discussed weather-related challenges with the executing agencies and suggested modifications to the building’s front elevation and overall design.
“The construction of the Assam Legislative Assembly complex in Dibrugarh is an important step towards developing the city as the state’s second capital,” Sarma said, reiterating the 30-month completion target.
As per the master plan, the Assembly building will have three floors, while the MLA hostel will have nine upper floors above the ground floor. The complex will also feature an auditorium, a secretariat block, barracks, internal roads, parking facilities and landscaped green spaces.
Sarma later inspected the Multi-Disciplinary Sports Complex at Khanikar, where journalists flagged concerns over steep and narrow spectator-gallery steps, the quality of sanitary fittings, swimming pool temperature control, lighting, water-level management and roof leakage in the indoor stadium.
The Chief Minister directed the concerned officials and contractors to rectify the defects and take corrective measures. The stadium currently accommodates around 5,000 spectators, with plans to increase its capacity to approximately 35,000.
