Kolkata is preparing for another taste of El Clasico, with Barcelona and Real Madrid legends set to bring their famous rivalry to India on November 25. The exhibition will give fans another chance to see former stars of the Spanish giants together on Indian soil, following Real Madrid Legends’ victory in Mumbai last year.
With Luis Figo, Carles Puyol and Iker Casillas among the names reportedly expected, the contest could be a significant occasion for a city with a long relationship with world football.
Kolkata to host
West Bengal sports minister Indranil Khan announced on Tuesday that Barcelona Legends and Real Madrid Legends will meet at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, popularly known as the Salt Lake Stadium, on November 25.
The official squads have not yet been confirmed, although Portuguese great Figo, who represented both Spanish rivals during his playing career, and former Barcelona captain Puyol are among the prominent names expected to feature, alongside Spain’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Casillas. This will be the second time the two clubs’ legends have faced each other in India, following their meeting at Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium last year. Real Madrid Legends won that contest 2-0, with former striker Fernando Morientes and David Barral scoring the goals. The two sides also met in Miami earlier in 2026, playing out a 1-1 draw in which Martin Montoya scored for Barcelona and Álvaro Negredo found the net for Real Madrid.
Their Kolkata encounter will now bring the exhibition rivalry to another Indian city, with the final line-ups still to be confirmed. For supporters, the appeal lies in seeing familiar names from two of football’s most celebrated clubs share the same pitch again. Figo’s unusual connection to both sides adds another layer of interest, while the prospect of Puyol and Casillas appearing gives fans further reason to watch for the official team announcements.
Barcelona return to Kolkata after eight years
Barcelona’s visit will mark their first appearance in Kolkata since September 2018, when they faced Indian football giants Mohun Bagan at the same stadium. The Catalans won that match 6-0, with Javier Saviola, Roger Garcia, Pedro Landi, Jari Litmanen and Jofre Mateu among the scorers.Kolkata has hosted some of football’s biggest names over several decades, earning a reputation as one of India’s most devoted footballing cities.
One of its most memorable occasions came in 1977, when Brazilian legend Pelé led New York Cosmos against Mohun Bagan at Eden Gardens, while German giants Bayern Munich visited the city in 2008 to play the Kolkata club in a friendly. The city also hosted Lionel Messi’s only appearance on Indian soil in 2011, when Argentina faced Venezuela at the Salt Lake Stadium. More recently, the venue staged high-profile international friendlies in early October 2026, as India faced five-time world champions Brazil and two-time World Cup winners Uruguay.
The November exhibition will add another prominent fixture to that history, bringing together two clubs whose rivalry has captivated football supporters across generations. Although the squads remain unconfirmed, Kolkata’s latest football occasion already has a clear attraction: another chapter of El Clasico, this time featuring the legends who helped make it famous.
