Where to find the Prophetess
Medusa, also known as the Prophetess, is one of the first three bosses in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse that you face. You must defeat her to obtain the keys to open the gate to the catacombs. The game won't tell you where you can find these enemies, forcing you to explore every room in the initial maps for hints that will lead you to the boss rooms.
Below, we explain how to beat Medusa in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse and where to find her.
[Ed. note: This guide uses screenshots captured from a build still in development at the time of writing.]
Where to find the Prophetess in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
You can find the Prophetess in the Holy Innocents' Cemetery region, left of Paris Streets. Early in the game, the best way to reach the cemetery is to head left from the Street of the Tomb Masons area in Paris Streets.
In the Holy Innocents' Cemetery region, keep going left until you reach the Fountain of the Lost. Drop in the water to descend into the Serpent's Lair area below. The Prophetess's boss arena is the last room on the left, past the Mirror of Life on the right side.
How to beat Medusa in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse
The secret to defeating Medusa in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse is to memorize her attack rotation and become familiar with swapping between the platforms in the arena. Defeating her not only grants you the Prophetess' Key, but also the Petrifying Gaze arcana. Her moveset consists of three basic attacks:
- Slam attack: Medusa attacks you by slamming her arm onto the platform in front of her, then follows up with a slash attack. She always raises one of her arms for a few seconds before unleashing this attack. You have enough time to hit her a couple of times while she charges the attack, but eventually you will need to jump off of the platform. Practice dropping off the platform to avoid the attack, then coming back using the whip on the purple anchor to get back up.
- Petrifying attack: Medusa can release a petrifying beam, which you can identify as she charges the attack and small glowing particles fly toward her. To avoid the attack, turn Rose's back to Medusa.
- Tail attack: Throughout the fight, Medusa will use her tail to attack you if you stay on the lower platforms.
First, try to memorize these three attacks and how to deal with them. Once you can dodge them without any trouble, your goal is to stay on the upper platform closest to Medusa and look for the openings to attack her.
After you have attacked Medusa enough to deplete about 25% of her life bar, she will perform her ultimate move. The screen will shake, her tail will slam both lower platforms a few times, and Medusa will unleash a sequence of slash attacks in front of her. As soon as the screen starts shaking, move to the upper platform on the opposite side of Medusa. Wait for her tail to return to the water, then look for a large rock that has fallen from the ceiling of the arena. It will always be on the lower platform opposite Medusa. Quickly hide behind it. Otherwise, you won't avoid the multiple beams coming out of her hair, and you will die.
Medusa repeats her ultimate move a few times during the fight. Although she keeps the same pattern, after the second time, small rocks will start to fall from the ceiling that can damage you. Try to avoid them but prioritize hiding behind the large rock.
