Colombo, Oct. 12 (Daily Mirror) - The banks of Thabbowa Tank have been transformed into green grasslands to provide food for wild elephants, under an initiative launched by the Clean Sri Lanka Secretariat to help address the human-elephant conflict.
The initiative involved removing invasive plants that had spread across tank reservations, leaving little food for elephants and prompting them to venture into nearby villages in search of food, according to the Secretariat.
The project aims to restore these areas as elephant enrichment zones by encouraging the growth of grass and other vegetation that can provide food for wild elephants.
The Secretariat said efforts were underway to replicate the initiative, which began at Thabbowa, across the country's tank network.
The programme is being implemented under the guidance of the Ministers of Environment, with habitat enrichment identified as a measure to help reduce encounters between wild elephants and people.
