The Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, has challenged those responsible for restructuring Air Mozambique (LAM) to present concrete solutions, with defined deadlines and verifiable results, aimed at improving the airline’s operational performance and financial sustainability.
The minister was speaking on Wednesday in Macaneta, Maputo Province, during the second coordinating council meeting of the Ministry of Transport and Logistics.
“LAM does not just need to survive. It needs to regain its ability to serve the country and operate sustainably,” he said.
According to Matlombe, the restructuring should cover the company’s management, fleet utilisation, organisation of operations and passenger services.
The minister said the importance of the national airline for domestic connectivity, territorial integration, tourism and Mozambique’s links to international markets must be matched by measures to improve operational efficiency and reduce dependence on state support.
The measures outlined include defining a fleet management strategy, controlling costs, increasing revenue, and strengthening operational discipline and management accountability.
“We need an airline that is more reliable, operationally efficient, financially sustainable and results-oriented,” he stressed.
Matlombe said the restructuring process must move towards implementing concrete measures, with mechanisms to assess their implementation and the results achieved.
“We therefore expect those responsible for the process to present concrete solutions, defined deadlines and verifiable results. We cannot turn restructuring into an endless process of assessments and meetings,” he said.
The minister added that monitoring the process should make it possible to verify compliance with the measures adopted and their impact on the airline’s operational capacity.
In the civil aviation sector, the government also intends to urgently review the air transport fare structure, with a view to making tickets more competitive and affordable for citizens while safeguarding the safety and sustainability of operators.
Matlombe assured that the government would continue to monitor LAM’s restructuring, with a view to stabilising the company, restoring passenger confidence and improving service delivery.
The initiative forms part of government measures to strengthen domestic connectivity and promote the contribution of the transport and logistics sector to the country’s economic development.
