The Capital Development Authority (CDA) plans to increase daily ridership on Islamabad’s electric bus service from around 150,000 to 250,000 passengers by expanding the network and improving supporting infrastructure.
A CDA spokesperson told APP on Wednesday that at least 160 electric buses are currently operating on 21 routes across the federal capital. The service provides public transport to commuters, students, employees and other residents.
The authority is pursuing the expansion under the vision of Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and the leadership of CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf. It aims to provide safe, comfortable, affordable, and environmentally friendly transport facilities.
The spokesperson said the CDA is working to improve route coverage, operational efficiency and passenger facilities to meet Islamabad’s growing travel needs.
The expansion also aims to encourage public transport use, promote sustainable urban mobility and help reduce vehicle emissions and air pollution.
Along with increasing the bus fleet, the authority is developing supporting infrastructure, including modern bus depots and electric charging facilities.
A recently inaugurated electric bus depot has the capacity for 64 charging units and is expected to support the network’s growing operational needs.
The CDA said residents have responded positively to the service, with commuters, students and employees expressing satisfaction with the comfort, convenience and reliability of the buses.
The authority said public feedback will help it assess the service’s performance and identify areas for improvement. It added that the broader goal is to provide residents with an alternative to private vehicles and support a cleaner urban environment.
The CDA said it aims to make Islamabad cleaner, greener, and better connected by expanding access to modern and environmentally friendly public transport.
