The school service commission has failed to publish the results of selection tests for non-teaching posts before Durga Puja, as promised, leaving terminated but untainted Group C and Group D staff anxious about their future.
The candidates took the tests in March to retain their jobs after the Supreme Court terminated their appointments in April 2025, citing a “vitiated” recruitment process. Many have been without salaries for 19 months.
Commission chairman Dushyant Nariala had said in July that the results would be published before Puja.
An SSC official attributed the delay to the revision of the category-wise seat matrix following the BJP government’s decision to cut OBC reservation from 17% to 7%. The results are now likely to be declared after the vacation.
“The new OBC rules have delayed the results, casting uncertainty over our future,” said Amit Mandal, a terminated but untainted Group C employee.
“We are finding it difficult to survive,” he added.
In June 2025, the Mamata Banerjee government proposed an allowance for terminated non-teaching staff until they cleared fresh recruitment tests. Calcutta High Court stayed the move, citing concerns over payments from the state exchequer to employees appointed illegally.
On April 3, 2025, the SC terminated the appointments of 17,206 teachers and 8,445 non-teaching school staff. Around 3,500 non-teaching employees deemed untainted were asked to take fresh tests.
Under the Supreme Court’s order, 15,403 untainted teachers will continue to receive salaries until May 31, 2027, while the terminated non-teaching staff have been denied similar relief.
