Enugu Rangers’ hopes of reaching the group stage of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League ended in disappointment on Friday after Algerian champions MC Alger overturned a two-goal first-leg deficit to eliminate the Nigerian side with a 3-2 aggregate victory.
MC Alger defeated Rangers 3-0 in the return leg in Algiers, scoring three times in the second half to overturn the 2-0 advantage the Flying Antelopes had secured in the first meeting in Abeokuta. Blueprint reports
Chahreddine Boukholda opened the scoring in the 58th minute before Mohamed Saliou Bangoura added a second in the 84th minute. Soufiane Bayazid then struck in stoppage time to complete the comeback and send the Algerian side through to the next stage.
The result brought a painful end to Rangers’ continental campaign, with the Nigerian champions unable to protect the advantage they had worked hard to establish on home soil.
MC Alger turn the tie around after the break
Having lost the first leg 2-0, MC Alger entered Friday’s encounter needing a strong performance in front of their supporters to keep their Champions League ambitions alive.
The Algerians approached the return fixture with the urgency expected of a team facing elimination, while Rangers travelled to North Africa hoping to defend their lead and secure a place in the group stage.
The first half ended without a goal, leaving the tie finely balanced as both teams returned for the second period.
The breakthrough eventually arrived in the 58th minute when Boukholda found the net for MC Alger, reducing the aggregate deficit and giving the hosts renewed belief that a comeback was possible.
Rangers were now under increasing pressure, as another goal would bring the Algerians level on aggregate and shift the momentum decisively in their favour.
Bangoura delivered the next major blow in the 84th minute, scoring MC Alger’s second goal of the night. With the aggregate score level at 2-2, the contest moved towards a tense conclusion, with the next goal set to determine which side would progress.
Bayazid then settled the contest in stoppage time, scoring the goal that completed MC Alger’s 3-0 victory on the night and secured a 3-2 aggregate triumph.
Rangers unable to protect first-leg advantage
The defeat will be particularly painful for Rangers because they had placed themselves in a strong position after an impressive performance in the first leg on October 18.
The Flying Antelopes defeated MC Alger 2-0 at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Nigeria, despite playing much of the encounter with 10 men.
Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was sent off in the 13th minute after bringing down an opposing attacker who was through on goal. Rangers were forced to reorganise early, but they remained competitive and frustrated the Algerian visitors.
MC Alger also lost a player to a red card in the second half when Oussama Benhaoua was dismissed for a second bookable offence.
Rangers eventually took advantage of the more balanced numbers. Kenneth Igboke converted a late penalty before substitute James Emo scored again to give the Nigerian side a two-goal cushion ahead of the return fixture.
Those goals had raised hopes that Rangers could secure a place among Africa’s leading clubs in the Champions League group stage. However, the advantage proved insufficient in Algiers, where MC Alger produced the response required to progress.
Another continental setback for Nigerian champions
Rangers’ elimination is a setback for Nigerian club football, which had looked to the Enugu-based side to make an impression in Africa’s premier club competition.
The club entered the tie after negotiating the previous qualifying round against AS Sobemap of the Benin Republic. That contest ended 1-1 on aggregate before Rangers advanced with a 5-4 penalty shootout victory in Lomé, Togo.
Their first-leg win over MC Alger appeared to put them within reach of the group stage, particularly after they showed resilience in playing with a numerical disadvantage for much of the match.
The return leg, however, exposed the difficulty of defending an aggregate lead away from home against a determined opponent. MC Alger capitalised on their opportunities after the interval, while Rangers were unable to find the goal that could have eased the pressure or changed the course of the contest.
The defeat means Rangers will not feature in the group stage of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League.
Historical echoes of the 1976 encounter
The outcome also recalls the clubs’ historic meeting in the 1976 African Cup of Champions Clubs semi-final.
Rangers had won the first leg 2-0, but MC Alger responded with a 3-0 victory in the return fixture to advance and eventually win the continental title.
Fifty years later, the Algerian side has repeated the same sequence of results against the Nigerian club, first losing 2-0 before winning 3-0 at home.
The parallel adds another painful dimension to Rangers’ elimination, particularly because the Nigerian side had entered the return leg with the same two-goal advantage that MC Alger overturned in the earlier encounter.
For the Algerians, the result represents a successful recovery from a difficult first leg and keeps their ambition of competing among Africa’s elite clubs alive.
Rangers must now regroup
For Rangers, attention will turn to recovering from the disappointment and refocusing on their domestic campaign.
The club will need to assess the reasons for the collapse in Algiers, particularly how the team managed the second half after conceding the opening goal.
Their performance in Abeokuta demonstrated that they could compete with the Algerian champions, but the return leg ultimately decided the tie. At this level, a promising first-leg result must be followed by the discipline and concentration needed to finish the job over two matches.
MC Alger, meanwhile, advance after a dramatic comeback that underlines the unpredictable nature of continental football.
For Rangers and their supporters, the 3-0 defeat will be difficult to accept after the team had worked so hard to establish a two-goal lead. Their Champions League journey is over, and the challenge now is to turn the disappointment into motivation for the remainder of the season.
