Former National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate for Kira Municipality, Mr Daniel Kananura, has asked the High Court in Wakiso to allow him to withdraw his election petition challenging the victory of National Unity Platform (NUP) MP George Musisi.
Appearing on Monday before Justice George Okello, Mr Kananura, through his lawyer Charles Allan Bukuwa, requested to withdraw the suit, arguing that the petition had not wasted the court’s time or that of the respondents.
The matter had come up for further hearing, with the cross-examination of Electoral Commission witness Ruth Kashaga pending. However, before the witness could take the stand, Mr Bukuwa asked the court to allow his client to withdraw the petition without paying costs.
The request was strongly opposed by legal teams representing Mr Musisi and the Electoral Commission, who argued that their clients had incurred substantial expenses defending the case and ought to be compensated.
