Luka Doncic isn’t just settling into life with the Los Angeles Lakers; he is fully embracing the spotlight as the new face of the iconic franchise.

Following a dominant 127-105 season-opening victory over the Golden State Warriors, the Slovenian superstar reflected on what it means to carry the mantle for one of the most storied brands in professional sports. Golden State Warriors rookie Yaxel Lendeborg tried poking the bear with some second-quarter chatter, but Doncic quickly turned the noise into motivation. He took over the game, pouring in 23 of his 28 points in the first half to put the contest out of reach early.

By the end of the night, Doncic stuffed the box score with 28 points, eight rebounds, seven assists, and three steals in just 30 minutes of action. He was efficient from distance as well, drilling five 3-pointers and dictating the tempo from start to finish.

When asked after the game about carrying the weight of the franchise on his shoulders and his long-term future in Southern California, Doncic kept it real about how much the opportunity means to him.

“Obviously it’s the Lakers, it’s one of the biggest organizations in the world, if not the biggest,” Doncic said. “It’s a lot of honor just to be the face of this franchise. I hope I can stay here long. It doesn’t feel different, but like I said, it’s very much an honor, and I’m just enjoying this moment.”
