Ten reciters have emerged from the Edo State Qur’anic Recitation Competition to represent the state at the 2026 National Competition scheduled to hold in Jigawa State in December.
Announcing the results in Benin City, the State Musabaqah Coordinator, Hamza Umar Usman, said the selected reciters came first in their respective categories.
“About 1,000 students participated in the competition at the local government and senatorial district levels. Ten reciters, comprising males and females who took first positions in their respective categories, were selected to represent the state at the competition scheduled to hold in December 2026.
“The reciters would be camped for one month to further groom them in memorising and reciting the Holy Qur’an fluently and effectively. We are not just participating; we are going there to win,” he said.

Earlier, the Special Adviser to the Edo State Governor on Islamic Religious Matters, Ahmed Musa Momoh, said the competition was designed to encourage children to learn and memorise the Glorious Qur’an.
He said the competition also aimed to promote Islamic knowledge and moral discipline among youths, foster unity, peace and brotherhood among Muslims in Edo State, and select the best reciters to represent the state at the national competition.
Momoh commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for his support for Islamic activities and for creating an enabling environment for religious harmony in Edo State.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Edo State Musabaqah, HRH Kelvin Danesi, the Aidonogie of South Ibie, said the essence of the competition was not only to train reciters but also to inculcate Islamic values and morals for a better society.
He said the competition had been decentralised to ensure that Muslims across the three senatorial districts participated in the programme.
On his part, the Secretary to the Edo State Government and Chairman of the competition, Umar Musa Ikhilor, said the event should encourage Muslim children and their parents to take the study and recitation of the Qur’an seriously.
“I believe that, by seeing the participation of these children, it is going to serve as motivation for those who have not yet participated,” he added.
He also commended the governor for his support for religious activities across all faiths.
