Imagine popping into a bar for a something to eat, fancying a little mayonnaise with it, and being told there isn’t any. Most people would sigh, eat their meal without it or try somewhere else. One customer in southern Spain apparently had a rather different response: he set fire to the bar. The spectacularly disproportionate reaction has now earned him three years and six months in prison, after he admitted deliberately starting the blaze at a café in Los Palacios y Villafranca, in the province of Sevilla.
Even though the incident happened in August 2025, the consequences have finally caught up with him in court. And if you thought the argument was over something particularly elaborate on the menu, think again. The missing ingredient was mayonnaise or ketchup for his montadito, (a small bread roll popular in Spain).
A sandwich request takes a disastrous turn
The bar, Las Postas, on Avenida de Cádiz, was serving customers when the man asked for mayonnaise or ketchup to accompany his food. Staff told him they had neither. That should have been the end of a simple exchange between a hungry customer and a kitchen that had run out of condiments. Instead, the situation escalated into something completely unexpected that could have ended very differently for the people inside.
According to reports of the case, the man, identified as José Rafael, used petrol from a plastic bottle to douse the bar counter before setting it alight, despite knowing that the premises were full of customers. There is no dressing this up as a moment of frustration that got slightly out of hand. Deliberately setting fire to a busy bar over a missing sauce put people at risk and caused damage that would take considerably more than a fresh bottle of mayonnaise to fix. The prosecution initially sought 11 years in prison, reflecting the seriousness of the offence.
From an 11-year request to three and a half years
The final sentence was reduced after the defendant reached an agreement with the prosecution and admitted the offence. His compensation for the damage, which amounted to €9,245, was also taken into account as a mitigating circumstance. He accepted a prison sentence of three years and six months. He must also stay at least 500 metres away from the café for 10 years and pay fines for two minor injury offences.
The compensation may help repair the financial damage, but it does not undo the risk created when a fire was deliberately started in a room full of people. A customer who had simply wanted something to eat could hardly have expected a routine visit to a local bar to turn into an emergency.
A very expensive taste in condiments
Spain takes their montaditos very seriously, and this gentleman clearly much more so. These small sandwiches, usually served on a small piece of bread, are a familiar sight in bars across the country, with fillings ranging from ham and cheese to pork and squid. Mayonnaise or ketchup might be a welcome extra, depending on what is inside. But no sandwich is worth risking other people’s lives over, and there are plenty of ways to deal with a bar that has run out of something. Asking for another option, ordering something else or taking your custom elsewhere would all have been considerably less costly choices.
Instead, this customer has ended up with a prison sentence, a compensation bill of more than €9,000 and a decade-long restriction on approaching the establishment. The next time a bar tells you it has run out of mayonnaise, it may be worth remembering this case before making a fuss. Your meal might be a little drier than you hoped, but at least you can finish it without turning it into a court case.
