Overview:
Ranking first on Google no longer promises an AI citation. The gap between the two has widened over the past year.
Google, Perplexity, and ChatGPT each select sources differently. A single optimization strategy will not work across all three.
Publishers gain ground by building original evidence and broad topical coverage. Format tricks do not move the needle.
Ranking first on Google used to settle the question of visibility. That link between organic rank and AI citation is weakening fast. Ahrefs ran a March 2026 analysis across 863,000 keywords and 4 million AI Overview citation URLs. It found that 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 result blocks.
In July 2025, that share stood near 76%. Ahrefs also improved its parsing method between the two studies. The full drop should not be pinned on one single cause. A top-10 ranking still matters. It just promises far less than it did a year ago.
How AI Search Engines Choose What to Cite
Most AI search tools work on a shared method called retrieval-augmented generation. Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and ChatGPT all use some version of it. The system pulls relevant passages from a wide pool of pages. It then writes an answer grounded in that text and cites the page each passage came from.
Google's own developer documentation states that AI Overviews and AI Mode build on its existing ranking systems. Special markup is not required. Artificially shortened content brings no extra benefit. Standard SEO practices still apply.
One force behind the widening gap is query fan-out. Google breaks a single search into several related sub-questions. It then pulls citations from whichever pages answer those sub-questions well.
The original query alone does not decide the outcome. A page can sit outside the top 10 for its main keyword and still earn a citation simply by answering one fan-out question with precision.
What the Research Actually Shows
The numbers here need careful reading. Different studies measure different things. A separate Ahrefs study looked at 15,000 prompts across three assistants: ChatGPT, Gemini, and Copilot. Their citations overlapped with Google's top 10 only 12% of the time, on average. That figure describes the group. It is not a result for ChatGPT alone.
Perplexity was measured separately in the same dataset. Its citations landed in Google's top 10 close to 29% of the time. That was the closest alignment to Google among all the assistants tested. Perplexity runs its own retrieval and ranking pipeline rather than pulling directly from Google or Bing results.
ChatGPT's source selection draws on a search partner, its own retrieval layer, and licensing arrangements with specific publishers. That mix shapes which pages ChatGPT can draw from. It does not explain why one eligible page wins a citation over another on a given query.

What Publishers Can Do
The safest response treats AI citation as its own goal, separate from ranking position. A few actions hold up well against the evidence. Build pages that answer the main question along with its likely sub-questions in full. Fan-out retrieval rewards broad topical coverage, not just the headline keyword.
One practical step: check which queries and subtopics around a subject already send citations to competing pages. Identify the missing evidence or explanation on the existing page, then fill that gap directly instead of guessing at a rewrite.
Prioritize original data, a documented method, or a clearly sourced explanation over a paraphrased summary. That gives an AI system something specific to extract and credit. Keep facts and figures dated and current, especially on subjects that shift often.
Follow Google's own guidance rather than unverified formatting tricks. No confirmed benefit exists for chopping content into short fragments purely to please an AI system. Publishers should also track success through separate lenses.
AI-generated answers can reduce the need to visit a source page for certain queries. Citation frequency and referral traffic measure different things. One should never be assumed to predict the other.

Final Thought
The publishers who adapt fastest will treat each platform as its own distinct system, not one shared moving target. The real advantage comes from content built to stand as evidence, not content shaped only to pass a format checklist.

FAQs
1. Does ranking on page one of Google guarantee an AI citation?
No. Ahrefs' March 2026 data found only 37.9% overlap between AI Overview citations and Google's top 10 results. A strong ranking helps, but it does not guarantee a citation anymore.
2. Why does Google cite pages that do not rank for the search term?
Google often breaks a search into several related sub-questions through query fan-out. A page can earn a citation by answering one of those sub-questions well, even if it does not rank for the main keyword.
3. Does Perplexity use Google's search results to pick its sources?
No. Perplexity runs its own retrieval and ranking pipeline. Its citations still align with Google's top 10 about 29% of the time, closer than most other assistants tested.
4. Is ChatGPT's citation behavior the same as Gemini or Copilot?
Not exactly. Ahrefs grouped all three in one study and found a 12% average overlap with Google's top 10. The figure describes the group as a whole, not ChatGPT on its own.
5. What is the single most useful step for improving AI search visibility?
Publishers should check which queries and subtopics already send citations to competing pages, then add the missing evidence or explanation their own page lacks, rather than rewriting content without a clear gap to fill.
