Esports World Cup targets 1.8 million players through 400-plus events, with grassroots tournaments offering routes to global competition
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian esports players and tournament organisers will have more opportunities to reach the global stage after the Esports World Cup (EWC) announced an expanded qualification programme for 2027.
The EWC Qualifier Programme aims to reach 1.8 million players through more than 400 events worldwide next year, connecting established tournaments and grassroots competitions to the Road to EWC, the pathway to the global championship.
The programme features two routes, namely EWC Direct Qualifiers and EWC Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers (SLCQs). Direct Qualifiers will connect established esports tournaments to the championship, allowing organisers to retain their identities and local commercial opportunities while meeting EWC and publisher standards.

Meanwhile, Satellite Last Chance Qualifiers will give local tournament organisers, esports venues, cyber cafes, universities, federations and gaming festivals an opportunity to host competitions under their own identities, with marketing support from the Esports Foundation.
Winners of the Satellite qualifiers will secure guaranteed entry into the relevant EWC Last Chance Qualifier tournaments next summer, where they will compete for a place in the main event.
The foundation will also provide accommodation and visa support for the winners.
The initial Satellite programme will cover Chess, Counter-Strike 2, FATAL FURY: City of the Wolves and Street Fighter 6, with additional titles to be announced.
All qualifying events must comply with publisher requirements and EWC competitive standards, including anti-cheat measures, officiating and verified results.
Malaysia has already benefited from existing qualification pathways, with Selangor Red Giants and Team Vamos earning places in the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Mid Season Cup at EWC 2026 through MPL Malaysia.
Team Vamos reached the quarter-finals, while Team Rey Young qualified for the MLBB Women’s Invitational after winning the redONE MLBB Ladies International Invitational.
Applications for the 2027 programme are open until 20th Dec 2026, at esportsworldcup.com, with approved events required to conclude by 1st June 2027.
