The Enugu state government has set an ambitious target of exporting 400,000 metric tons of coal annually as part of a landmark partnership aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s solid minerals sector and diversifying the economy from oil.
The project is being spearheaded by the National Personal Assets Acquisition Scheme (NAPAAS) led by its Chief Operating Officer, Engr. Eze Nnadi, in strategic partnership with technical partners from Poland and Turkey, and heavy machinery supplier, Sanny Nigeria.
Speaking to journalists recently at the Nigeria Mining Week 2026, Engr. Nnadi said the venture is designed to ensure that Nigeria’s wealth remains within the country while maximizing value from its mineral resources.
Under the operational model, he explained, 30 percent of the coal mined will be exported, while 70 percent will be processed locally into finished products.
He disclosed that the initial phase of the project is projected to yield nearly N10 billion, a development expected to significantly boost the nation’s economy.
Beyond revenue generation, the project places strong emphasis on job creation and local capacity building. According to Nnadi, NAPAAS currently has an active workforce and plans to scale up employment to 1,000 as operations expand.
To bridge technical skill gaps, the organisation is collaborating with Enugu State Smart Schools. Through its partnership with Sanny Nigeria, the schools will serve as training centres for local excavator operators and mechanics.
Assuring seamless operations, Mr. Jack Zeng, the Chinese partner in charge of equipment procurement for Sanny Nigeria, said equipment acquisition and maintenance will be fully supported.
Zeng said Sanny Nigeria maintains major warehouses in strategic locations including Lagos, Abuja, Kano and Port Harcourt, backed by over 70 Chinese and local engineers for after-sales service and rapid deployment of spare parts.
