True Detective: Night Country wrapped in February 2024, with Jodie Foster leading the critically acclaimed HBO anthology show. Night Country, which marked the fourth season of True Detective, received 19 Emmy nominations in 2024, including a win for Foster in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Anthology Series or Movie category, and nominations for co-stars John Hawkes and Kali Reis.
Fans are eager to see where showrunner Issa López will take the story for the next season’s arc—that is, if True Detective is slated to return. Here’s what we know so far.
Has True Detective been renewed for season 5?
HBO confirmed in February 2024 that True Detective will continue for another season, and Issa López, who helmed Night Country, will return as showrunner. (She also landed a new multiyear overall deal to create content exclusive to HBO and HBO Max.)
Upon the renewal news, López said in a statement, “From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life. HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true. I can’t wait to go again.”
In a separate statement, Francesca Orsi, executive vice president, HBO Programming, head of HBO Drama Series and Films, shared: “Issa López is that one-of-a-kind, rare talent that speaks directly to HBO’s creative spirit. She helmed True Detective: Night Country from start to finish, never once faltering from her own commendable vision, and inspiring us with her resilience both on the page and behind the camera. Alongside Jodie and Kali’s impeccable performances, she’s made this installation of the franchise a massive success. We are so lucky to have her as part of our family.”
What would True Detective season 5 be about?
Every season of True Detective always starts with a new murder, meaning it’s pretty unlikely the anthology series will return to Alaska to visit Danvers (Foster) and Navarro (Reis). Sure enough, in November 2025, during HBO’s 2026 slate presentation in New York City, HBO boss Casey Bloys shared that season 5 will be based in New York. He also shared that López is still working on the scripts.
In an August 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, López suggested the tone of the new season will differ from season 4. “I’m dying for everyone to know because it’s very different and very exciting,” she said. “It’s even darker and even more twisted. I can’t wait to put it out there.” She had previously shared with Variety that she was “in the writing [process]. And it’s a blast. It’s completely different. Different characters, different setting, different story, and I’m enjoying it like crazy.”
In an interview with Deadline on the Emmys red carpet in September 2024, López teased a little bit more about the upcoming season. “Different characters, different placement,” she confirmed, but teased there will be “a lot of connections with Ennis and Night Country.”
Who is in the cast?
On October 10, Nicolas Cage confirmed that he would be starring in season 5 of True Detective while attending New York Comic Con.
Days later, Variety reported on October 16 that Antonio Banderas will also star in the show. “Banderas will star as Rai García while Cage will play the role of Henry Logan,” the outlet shared, noting that additional details are sparse.
