Civil society leader Edmund Yakani has urged delegates to the Inter-Party Dialogue to adopt clear and practical resolutions to guide preparations for the December 2026 elections.
The dialogue is expected to conclude on Tuesday, with delegates set to validate the resolutions.
Yakani said the resolutions should promote the inclusion of all political actors and stakeholders in building consensus on the conditions needed for peaceful, free, fair and credible elections.
He urged political leaders to assess the time remaining and commit to completing outstanding tasks ahead of the election deadline.
Yakani warned that several preparations were yet to be completed, calling on delegates to make realistic decisions about whether the remaining work could be accomplished before December.
He also called for the continued implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan (R-ARCSS), saying the peace agreement should remain part of the country’s post-election agenda.
The civil society leader urged delegates to support regional and international efforts by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the African Union and the United Nations to help South Sudan move from conflict to peace.
He said the proposed joint committee involving the three organisations should be embraced as an opportunity to coordinate peace and stability efforts with relevant parties.
Yakani acknowledged that elections remained a popular demand among South Sudanese but stressed that the necessary conditions must be in place to ensure that votes are counted and determine the country’s next government.
He accused political leaders of delaying the transition and warned against using extensions of the transitional period to prolong their stay in power.
Yakani said the transitional period is due to end on 22 February 2027. He warned that failure to hold credible elections could raise questions about the continuation of the current caretaker government and trigger calls for an interim administration.
South Sudan is scheduled to hold general elections on 22 December 2026, amid ongoing discussions on electoral preparations and the implementation of the peace agreement.
