A thunderstorm asthma warning has been sounded for Canberra, with high levels of pollen and windy conditions forecast for Sunday.
In an official statement, the ACT government warned that high pollen levels, windy conditions and forecast storms have increased the risk of thunderstorm asthma on Sunday, October 25, across the ACT and surrounding region.
While anyone can be affected by thunderstorm asthma, those who have a history of, or currently suffer from asthma or hay fever are at higher risk of being affected.
People at higher risk are advised to:
- monitor for asthma or hay fever symptoms.
- Take medications as prescribed in your asthma or hay fever action plan. Carry these medications with you when you leave home.
- Try to stay indoors with the windows and doors closed.
- Avoid being outdoors during gusty winds. While you're indoors during the storm, turn off any air conditioners that bring outside air inside including evaporative coolers.
In the event of a medical emergency, call Triple Zero (000) and stay indoors while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.
The Bureau of Meteorology forecast predicts a thunderstorm is likely on Sunday afternoon, possibly severe with damaging winds, large hail and heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding.
An increased risk means a thunderstorm asthma event is possible, but thunderstorm asthma events are rare, the ACT government said.
