John Harbaugh made a bold choice to run the ball instead of kicking early, and it cost the Giants a clear path to victory. The coach admitted the plan was to get closer to the end zone before attempting a field goal, but that strategy left the team with no margin for error when disaster struck. Sunday’s 27-27 tie with the Commanders was a missed opportunity that could have been avoided with a simpler approach.
The Risky Plan Behind the Tie
With the two-minute warning in effect, the Giants secured a golden opportunity to run out the clock after gaining a first down at the Washington 24-yard line. The Commanders were out of timeouts, meaning the Giants could have simply taken a knee to force a field goal as time expired.
Instead, the team tried to gain more ground, a decision that Harbaugh explained was intentional. According to NBC Sports, Harbaugh called the 42-yard field goal attempt “very makeable, but it’s not a gimme” and said the goal was to “try to get as many yards as we could” rather than kick early.
The strategy relied on running the ball twice to get closer, then taking a knee to protect the football. Harbaugh stated the idea was to run it down and get as close as possible before kicking. This plan meant that if the kicker missed, the Commanders would have no time left to get back into the game.
But the execution fell apart when running back Cam Skattebo fumbled the ball on the very next play after the two-minute warning. NBC Sports reported that the Giants’ handling of the situation would have faced intense focus had the Commanders won the game.
Why the Extra Yards Did Not Matter
The math was simple: the Giants did not need more yards to win; they just needed to avoid a turnover. Harbaugh acknowledged that the team practiced this specific situation plenty of times, yet the fumble happened anyway. He noted that Skattebo played a hell of a game overall but must learn from this mistake. The coach said Skattebo knows he has to be accountable and expects him to do better next time. The pain of this lesson is real, even if the game ended in a tie rather than a loss.
The Commanders also made critical errors at the end of the game that prevented them from capitalizing on the turnover. Dan Quinn took full blame for the clock mismanagement, saying it is “my responsibility and no one else’s” to ensure his team does not find themselves in that situation. Quinn admitted the sequencing of the final play did not fall on the quarterback, noting that the timing of the throw or the clock management was on him. He stated that the team could have finished the kick earlier and did not need to gain more yards.
A Wake-Up Call for the Giants
Harbaugh’s admission that the team wanted more yards reveals a mindset that prioritizes field position over certainty in critical moments. While the coach said the strategy was decided early in training camp and might be used again, the result on Sunday suggests a flaw in the logic. The Giants were in a perfect spot to force a win with a simple run-out-the-clock play, but the gamble for extra yards led to a fumble that gave Washington a lifeline.
The next game on Sunday, Oct. 18 against the New Orleans Saints offers a chance to correct these mistakes. The Giants must decide if they will stick with a high-risk plan or adopt a safer approach when the clock is winding down.
As Harbaugh noted, the team will see how close they get next time, but the cost of this error was a guaranteed win turned into a tie. The lesson from Sunday is clear: sometimes, getting closer is not worth the risk of losing the game entirely.
