It would be an understatement to say that barrel-leg trousers have become a high street favourite. Thanks to their relaxed fit and curved silhouette, the comfortable yet considered staple has cemented itself as an incredibly chic piece that’s now stocked everywhere.
A few months ago, M&S led the way with its cargo version, dubbed the ‘bargo’ - a clever blend of cargo and barrel-leg trousers. Of course, as with many pieces from the high street retailer, plenty of sizes sold out at record speed. At the time of writing, only four or five sizes remain across all four colours. But, fast-forward to now, because M&S has released a new version that’s a little less cargo, and a little more elevated.

The new Pure Cotton Barrel Leg Trousers keep the easy, curved shape of the popular original but take a far more tailored approach. Instead of the cargo style’s oversized leg pockets and utility details, this latest pair has a cleaner finish, with subtle pleat detailing at the sides and a neat hook and zip fastening.
They sit high on the waist, too, giving the relaxed shape a smarter feel. Made from pure cotton, they’re designed to feel breathable and comfortable enough for everyday wear, without scrimping on style.
At just £40, they’re a fresh take on a style M&S fashion lovers have already embraced. The original trousers brought a more utilitarian edge to the barrel-leg shape, with patch pockets, belt loops and a mid-rise waist. This new version pares things back, making the silhouette easier to dress up or down.

For styling, wear them with a tucked in shirt or a fine knit and loafers for a smart casual look, or keep things relaxed with a simple T-shirt and trainers. They’re available in sandstone, in sizes 6 to 24 and four inside leg options: extra short, short/petite, regular and long. We’re hoping M&S will add more colours at a later date.
So, if you missed out on the original, there’s still time to try M&S’s sleeker new take. They’re a great addition to any autumn wardrobe and can be worn for a range of occasions, from everyday errands to smarter evening outings.
