After DC Universe co-head Peter Safran confirmed the two lead actors for the upcoming Mister Miracle adaptation, we now have a first look at the animated show. The promo image shows Mister Miracle staring into the eyes of his longtime love interest, Big Barda, as a silhouette (Darkseid) approaches in the background.
The DCU’s other co-head, James Gunn, officially confirmed Safran’s off-the-cuff comments about the upcoming Mister Miracle series, welcoming Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) as Mister Miracle and Mackenzie Davis (Below, Station Eleven) as Big Barda. Gunn revealed Mister Miracle will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios, and reiterated that comic author Tom King will helm the series. The show will adapt King and Mitch Gerads’ Eisner-winning run of Mister Miracle, which went for 12 issues between 2017 and 2019. King most recently co-wrote and co-created the TV series Lanterns.
Safran said the following about King's work on Mister Miracle: "I think that Tom King really learned a lot in his season of co-creating and executive producing Lanterns, and he adapted his book Mister Miracle fully on his own and wrote all eight episodes, and I think it's just dynamite." According to Safran, the Mister Miracle series will run for eight 30-minute episodes, with the potentialfor additional seasons. DC Studios is currently aiming for a 2028 premiere.
What is Mister Miracle about?
While Mister Miracle dates back decades, most modern superhero fans are probably familiar with the character from King’s 2017 comic. It follows Scott Free, a New God (an alien species with functional immortality), as he builds a new life on Earth alongside his fellow Apokolips emigrant, Big Barda.
DC offers the following description of the comic:
Scott Free is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. So great that he escaped Granny Goodness’ gruesome orphanage and the dangers of Apokolips to travel across galaxies and set up a new life on Earth with his wife, the former Female Fury known as Big Barda. Using the stage alter ego of Mister Miracle, he has made a career for himself showing off his acrobatic escape techniques. He even caught the attention of the Justice League, which counted him among its ranks.
You might say Scott Free has everything...so why isn’t it enough? Mister Miracle has mastered every illusion, achieved every stunt, pulled off every trick—except one. He has never escaped death. Is it even possible? Our hero is going to have to kill himself if he wants to find out.
