In a complementary effort to address infrastructure gaps and improve access to safe water, Blue Lagos, in partnership with Uriel Construction Limited, has commenced the construction of five solar-powered borehole projects across selected riverine communities in four local government areas of Lagos State.
According to a recent statement, the projects sponsored by the Koh Pbat Campaign Team through Uriel Construction Limited, are strategically located to address water-access challenges in underserved communities.
The statement added that the projects are designed to improve access to water for domestic use, reduce the burden on residents who face difficulties obtaining safe water, and contribute to better sanitation, public health and household welfare.
“The beneficiary communities are Seje Jegba, Badagry Local Government Area; Sagbonkodji, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area; Olomometa, Ojo Local Government Area; Agadangba, Ward C1, Epe Local Government Area; and Igbo Apawa, Ward D1, Epe Local Government Area,” the statement read in part.
It noted that the use of solar-powered systems is intended to support a more sustainable approach to water provision by reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources.
“This is particularly relevant to riverine communities where infrastructure challenges can affect the availability and reliability of essential services,” it added.
It highlighted that access to safe water remains a fundamental development need, with implications for health, hygiene, education, household productivity and the overall quality of life.
The statement emphasised that by commencing these five projects, Blue Lagos and Uriel Construction Limited are extending development efforts beyond immediate humanitarian relief to include community infrastructure capable of delivering long-term benefits.
It maintained that the initiative particularly acknowledged the contribution of the Lagos State Waterways Authority for donating life jackets to improve safety among residents who depend on Lagos waterways.
“The initiative recognises the important role of corporate organisations, government institutions, humanitarian organisations, development partners and community stakeholders in facilitating interventions that address the needs of underserved populations,” it highlighted.
Blue Lagos calls for sustained collaboration among government agencies, corporate organisations, development partners, community leaders and other stakeholders to expand access to healthcare, safe water, livelihood opportunities and waterway safety interventions across Lagos State.
Speaking on the intervention, the Team Lead of Blue Lagos, Mr Saheed Adesanya, reaffirmed the initiative’s commitment to ensuring that residents of underserved coastal and riverine communities are not excluded from development opportunities because of their geographical location.
He explained that the Badagry outreach builds on previous interventions in communities including Sagbonkodji, Bishop Kodji, Takwa Bay and Ilado-Odo in Amuwo-Odofin, as well as Yegunda, Ito Omu, Isan, Oko-Abe, Ito Osun, Saga, Emina and Take Nla in Epe, among other locations.
“Blue Lagos adopts a community-centred approach that combines immediate humanitarian assistance with practical interventions aimed at improving public health, strengthening livelihoods, enhancing waterway safety and supporting long-term community development,” Adesanya said.
The projects are expected to provide more reliable access to water for domestic use, improve sanitation and public health, and enhance the overall well-being of beneficiary communities.
