The power of this quote lies in the words the first time. Angelou's message, as recalled by her close friend and former student of life lessons, television host Oprah Winfrey, was not that people should be judged forever by one imperfect moment.
It was that we should pay attention when their actions reveal something important about their character. In a 1997 commencement address at Wellesley College, Winfrey credited Angelou with teaching her this lesson. She recalled Angelou warning against waiting until the 29th time before believing what someone's behaviour had already revealed. Winfrey returned to the lesson in later tributes, describing it as one of the most valuable things her mentor had taught her.
Why do we keep ignoring the red flags?
The uncomfortable truth is that noticing someone's behaviour and accepting what it means are two different things.A 2021 article in Psychology Today, written by psychologist Lawrence Josephs, explains how confirmation bias can influence romantic relationships. Once we form a favourable impression of someone, we may pay more attention to the things that support it and dismiss the details that challenge it. We might interpret repeated dishonesty as a mistake, emotional distance as stress or broken promises as temporary setbacks.
What Oprah Winfrey said
In the commencement address, Oprah said, “That is particularly good when it comes to men situations because when he doesn't call back the first time, when you are mistreated the first time, when you see someone who shows you a lack of integrity or dishonesty the first time, know that that will be followed by many, many, many other times that will at some point in life come back to haunt or hurt you. When people show you who they are, believe them, the first time.

's advice is not about judging people too quickly
There is a crucial distinction between believing what someone's actions reveal and deciding that one mistake tells you everything about them.People have bad days. They misunderstand one another, react poorly under pressure and occasionally let others down. A healthy relationship leaves room for accountability, honest conversations and the possibility of improvement. What deserves attention is a recurring pattern: someone repeatedly dismisses your feelings, refuses to take responsibility or makes promises without following through.
When the same problem keeps returning, it becomes harder to explain it away as an isolated incident.Angelou's advice encourages people to take those patterns seriously instead of allowing hope to become an excuse for overlooking them.
The real lesson: Stop confusing potential with reality
One of the most difficult parts of any relationship is accepting that someone can have good qualities and still not treat you in a way that works for you.You may remember their kindness, admire their ambition or understand why they struggle to communicate.
You may even believe they are capable of becoming a better partner, friend or colleague. None of those possibilities changes what is happening in the present. And that is where Angelou's advice becomes particularly relevant. It asks you to consider a person's actions alongside their intentions, rather than allowing the person you hope they will become to overshadow the person they are today. This is not an invitation to become cynical or suspicious of everyone.
Trust still matters. So does forgiveness. But neither requires you to ignore repeated behaviour that leaves you feeling disrespected, uncertain or diminished.Sometimes, self-respect begins with a quieter decision: you stop arguing with the evidence. You stop making the same excuses on someone else's behalf. And you allow your next decision to be guided by what you have learned, rather than what you still wish were true.Perhaps the most powerful part of Angelou's lesson is not about knowing when to walk away. It is about knowing when to stop asking someone to show you, again and again, what they have already shown you.
