With less than three weeks to go, Cape Town is preparing for the inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon on Sunday, 18 October 2026, bringing thousands of runners and walkers together for a landmark event rooted in sport, remembrance and purpose.
Organised by Golazo in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the event takes place under the banner Rise. Remember. Run., celebrating Nelson Mandela’s belief in the power of sport to unite people and inspire change. With profits donated directly to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Momentum continues to build, with Takealot announced as a major sponsor and exclusive official retail partner, supporting an event that celebrates South Africa, its people and Mandela’s enduring values.
A Route with Meaning
The 42km marathon starts in Strand Street and finishes on the historic Grand Parade, taking runners through the heart of Cape Town.
The broader race weekend incorporates the iconic Slave Route Challenge, with routes passing historically significant locations including the Castle of Good Hope, Company’s Garden, Bo Kaap and District Six, with views of Robben Island.
Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Dr Mbongiseni Buthelezi, says: “This is about carrying forward the values Madiba stood for: dignity, unity, courage and justice. At a time when the world feels increasingly divided, even the smallest step can connect us to something greater than ourselves.”
Bob Verbeeck, CEO of Golazo, adds: “Running has always been one of the most inclusive sports, and this series embodies that spirit. It is a true honour to work alongside the Nelson Mandela Foundation to pay tribute to Madiba and carry his values forward.”
The Slave Route Challenge
Golazo and Itheko Sport Athletic Club have joined forces to bring the Slave Route Challenge into the Nelson Mandela Marathon weekend, with 21km, 10km and 5km events joining the 42km marathon.
“The Slave Route Challenge has always been about more than running,” says Zarina Meyer Brewer, President of Itheko SAC. “It is a powerful act of remembrance honouring the resilience, dignity and legacy of enslaved communities whose stories shaped Cape Town and South Africa.”
A Route to the Ultras
The Nelson Mandela Marathon is proud to be a qualifying event for the 2027 Comrades Marathon and the 2027 TOTALSPORTS Two Oceans Marathon powered by BYD.
