Foreign Minister Penny Wong has called the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) decision to postpone general elections “deeply disappointing” and says it undermines hopes of a two-state solution with Israel.
PA President Mahmoud Abbas on Saturday postponed the elections scheduled for 28 November until 11 September next year, citing Israeli restrictions and the widespread destruction in Gaza for the postponement (SMH).
“We call on the Palestinian Authority to ensure elections take place without delay,” Wong said. “Credible elections are an important element of the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to the international community on reform, democratic renewal and accountable governance” (ABC).
A spokesperson for Wong indicated that Australia would not take practical steps towards recognition, such as the opening of embassies, until the PA upholds its commitments (SMH).
