Fall in Tokyo usually tastes of kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), chestnut and sweet potato rather than cinnamon and nutmeg, so the pumpkin spice latte has never been a big seasonal fixture here. Still, it shows up each autumn.
For instance, Starbucks brings back its seasonal classic, while the Nakameguro Roastery serves a whiskey barrel-aged version and a few independent cafés make their own. Here’s where to find one this season.
From September 30
Starbucks Coffee

The original pumpkin spice latte returned to Starbucks Japan on September 30, a day after an early release for Starbucks Rewards members. A spiced sauce made with pumpkin purée meets espresso and milk, finished with a dusting of nutmeg. It comes hot or iced. As with most seasonal drinks, it’s sold while supplies last and isn’t available at every store.

Starbucks Reserve Roastery Tokyo

For a more grown-up version, the Roastery in Nakameguro has a Barrel-Aged Pumpkin Spice Latte on its fall menu. It pairs the Roastery’s whiskey barrel-aged coffee with a powder made from Japanese-grown pumpkin, plus cinnamon, nutmeg and iyokan (a tangerine-like Japanese citrus) peel. It’s dine-in only, so plan to stay a while.

Tully’s Coffee

After a five-year break, Tully’s pumpkin series is back. The Pumpkin Pudding Latte is a pumpkin-flavored café latte topped with pumpkin whipped cream, pumpkin sauce and bitter caramel, and it leans more dessert than spice. Anyone after the classic PSL flavor may prefer the & TEA Pumpkin Chai Milk Tea, which pairs pumpkin with cinnamon and cardamom.
