Strong winds hit Western Scotland causing disruption on ferry and rail networks

Parts of Scotland are being hit with strong winds, causing disruption on roads, railways and ferries.

The Met Office had issued a yellow weather alert that will begin at 10am and last until 7pm, affecting the Inner and Outer Hebrides and western parts of the Highlands.

The forecaster said strong southwesterly winds with gusts of between 50mph and 60mph are “expected widely” across the region.

Winds could reach up to 70mph in exposed coastal areas and on hilltops, mainly during the late morning and early afternoon on Wednesday.

The Met Office says that winds will likely cause some travel disruption affecting trains, roads and ferries, including the CalMac ferry between the mainland and the Outer Hebrides.

There is already disruption on the CalMac ferry network, with dozens of sailings on multiple routes being cancelled due to adverse weather on Wednesday morning.

Scotrail said heavy rainfall also means speed restrictions are expected to be in place on the West Highland Line between Fort William and Mallaig throughout Wednesday and until Thursday at 10am.

Lorry drivers are also being warned when travelling on exposed routes and bridges.

The Met Office said: “Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary.”
