This time, it’s for public relations and communications.
McCurdy Sydney Airport has received an Airports Council International – North America award in the small airport category.
Winners of the award in the medium and large airport categories were Edmonton International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport, respectively.
“This is an incredibly proud and meaningful moment for the McCurdy Sydney Airport, our team, and Cape Breton,” said Myles Tuttle, chief executive officer of the Sydney Airport Authority, in a media release emailed on Oct. 22.
“We may be a small airport, but our commitment to the community we serve is anything but small. To receive this level of recognition among airports from across North America is truly extraordinary. It speaks to the passion, creativity, and dedication of our small but mighty team, and the pride we take in sharing our airport’s story and championing the region we are so fortunate to serve.”

Since 1948, the Airports Council International – North America has been representing airports of all sizes across Canada and the U.S.
As a “voice of airports,” the Airports Council advocates and promotes the civil aviation industry. This includes advocacy with government, environmental, and security agencies.
The Airports Council International is also involved in research and economic affairs. According to their website, council members make up 95 per cent of all domestic North American air travel and “virtually all” of the international travel.
In Canada, airports generate almost $50 million to the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) and provide 435,000 jobs.

The McCurdy Sydney Airport was the recipient of the 2026 Public Relations Programs Award, awarded at the annual Excellence in Airport Marketing, Communications, and Customer Experience Awards presented by the Airport Council International – North America.
There were almost 500 entries in the 20 different categories at this year’s awards.
“This recognition is a powerful reminder that meaningful impact isn’t measured by the size of an airport, but by the strength of its people, its partnerships, and its purpose,” Tuttle said.
