Nine years after Star Wars Battlefront II, there's finally a sign of life for a third installment. However, development of the long-awaited first-person shooter could be handled by a studio that hardly anyone would have expected.

Fans have been waiting for a sequel to Star Wars Battlefront II since 2017 – and now things may finally be moving forward. According to a report by US gaming magazine Electronic Gaming Monthly (EGM), Disney is reportedly very interested in a third installment and is already looking for a suitable development studio. Two prominent names are being considered: EA DICE and Bungie. More specifically, the information comes from the "Quartermann" rumor column in EGM issue 265, published on October 9. Gaming journalist Jeff Grubb discussed the relevant passage on October 19 during his Game Mess Mornings podcast. At the 22:42 mark, Grubb reads out the Battlefront report:
DICE is probably the studio most fans would have expected. The Swedish developer was already responsible for Star Wars Battlefront (2015) and Battlefront II (2017). Bungie, on the other hand, is a much more surprising candidate. The studio behind Halo and Destiny is now owned by Sony and has focused primarily on its own franchises in recent years. Taking over an established EA series would therefore be an unusual move.
Given Bungie's difficult financial situation, Jeff Grubb considers the studio's involvement at least conceivable. Sony recently had to take substantial write-downs on Bungie and announced extensive layoffs in June 2026. An established franchise like Star Wars could therefore open up new opportunities for the studio. However, Grubb himself believes DICE is more likely to get the job.
Fans excited – but skeptical of both studios
The possibility of Battlefront 3 has sparked excitement among fans on Reddit, although the two potential developers are receiving a less enthusiastic response. Both Bungie and DICE have reportedly lost many experienced employees in recent years and are no longer the same studios they once were. Bungie does, however, receive praise for the excellent gunplay in the Destiny games. For some fans, a Battlefront game with similarly satisfying shooting mechanics would be a dream come true. Whether Star Wars Battlefront 3 will actually happen, and when, remains uncertain. According to EGM, neither studio has made a firm commitment to developing the game so far.
As a child in the 90s, my Gameboy was my steady companion. After school, the PlayStation was fired up. When I finally got my first PC, I was completely hooked. My passion for gaming has never waned since. For me, writing for Notebookcheck means reporting on topics that are really close to my heart - in addition to gaming, I also like to write about e-mobility, photovoltaics and innovative gadgets. When I'm not sitting at my computer, I'm probably on water rescue duty on the Baltic coast or trying to counteract the downsides of my geek life - namely sitting for long periods - at the local swimming pool.
