Michael Carrick Fights for Time as Manchester United Crisis Deepens Ahead of Bournemouth
Michael Carrick has reached the point every Manchester United manager eventually hits when results collapse, performances turn sour and words suddenly matter almost as much as points. After a seven-match winless run and a grim 4-1 defeat at Como, he is still in the job. For now.
That is the immediate reality at Old Trafford. Carrick will take charge against Bournemouth this weekend, despite growing belief after Wednesday night that his dismissal was close. Internally, the line remains that it is business as usual. In football, that usually means business as usual until it is not.
United have not won since beating Sabah in early September. Since then, the early promise of the season has drained away at speed. The concern is not simply the lack of victories. It is the manner of the decline, the lack of control, the loss of identity and the sight of a team playing well below the standards expected at a club that still measures itself against its own history.

Manchester United Form Leaves Carrick Exposed
Carrick knows exactly where he stands. Managers do not deliver six-minute statements before a press conference unless they understand the noise around them. He chose to confront it head on, and the tone was clear, defensive in one sense, but also an attempt to reassert authority and remind supporters that he understands the weight of the badge.
He said: “I’ll start today. Just want to say a few things, really. I think it’s important.
“I think recently we haven’t had a good time. I think that’s pretty obvious, so I totally accept that, what we’re going through at the moment.
“We had five months of relative success in a spell where I was happy with a lot of things that I was seeing and that we were doing as a team.
“We haven’t done well enough lately. I think that’s pretty obvious to say, and we’ve had a spell that we’re really not happy with.
“Wednesday was a bad night. It was a bad night for a lot of reasons, and it was a bad night that kind of hurt a lot and obviously hurt me to see us play that way, to see how the game panned out.
“It was, as I said after the game, really unacceptable for us to play like that and to be like that.”
Fair enough. He is right on that much. The Como performance was unacceptable. United were poor, passive and alarmingly easy to play against. Managers survive bad results all the time. They do not survive repeated displays that suggest the team has stopped responding, or worse, has no clear idea what it is supposed to be.
Humility and Hard Work Message to Squad
Carrick’s central theme was humility. It came up again and again, along with hard work, sacrifice and respect for the institution. That is usually what managers return to when tactics and selections are no longer enough to steady things. He was trying to reconnect the current squad with the traditional language of Manchester United, grit, resilience, team-first mentality.

He said: “My responsibility is to get a team on a pitch that represents this football club, represents the supporters, and they can be proud of it with the identity that we show.
“And we have gone away from that just recently in certain games, which I’m totally fully aware of and definitely doing something about.
“So, I think it’s important that we all recognise that. I certainly recognise it, and our supporters are the utmost of importance to me in this football club.
“For them to feel like they felt for five months at the start of the year, for us to have that about us and that connection and that real vigour and intensity and enjoyment and passion that we all felt through that period was something that we need to get back to.
“And we will get back to it and I fully believe that, but I think it’s important that we recognise that we haven’t been doing that.”
That is the key line, “we have gone away from that”. He is admitting the team has drifted from what he wanted. The problem is simple. At Manchester United, drift quickly turns into crisis. There is little patience when form drops and no sympathy if the football looks soft.
Carrick also leaned heavily on the club’s history, invoking Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney, Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Matt Busby and Sir Bobby Charlton. The point was obvious. Manchester United has always demanded humility before status. He said: “Manchester United is always bigger, and it always has been, always will be, than any single individual. Bigger than me, bigger than any of the players, and it always has been.”
Bournemouth Test Could Define Next Step
The timing of Bournemouth’s visit matters. Marco Rose’s side arrive in strong form, organised, aggressive and entirely capable of punishing a fragile opponent. This is not the kind of fixture you want when confidence is low and scrutiny is high. If United start badly, Old Trafford will become tense very quickly.
Carrick tried to frame the current mess as a challenge of character rather than a terminal decline. He said: “It comes down to humility. It comes down to being humble. It comes down to being hardworking and being really proud to work hard and being proud to live up to them values.
“There’s a resilience about this football club that’s been shown for a long, long time.
“Whether that’s bouncing back from adversity, whether that’s comebacks, whether that’s late goals, whether that’s success, whether that’s sustaining success, there’s a resilience in this football club that runs very, very deep.”
Nice sentiment. Sentiment does not defend set pieces, win duels in midfield or stop a back line from falling apart under pressure. The next step has to be practical. United need a structure that makes sense, players who run, and senior figures who perform. Anything short of that and the rhetoric becomes wallpaper.
Old Trafford Pressure Building Fast
Carrick ended with a plea and a promise. “We’ve kind of lost our way a little bit, if I’m totally honest, and we’ll get it back. I’m totally convinced we’ll get it back.” That is what he has to say. The harder question is whether the club still believes him.
For now, he remains Manchester United manager. That means he still has a chance to drag this back from the edge. Beat Bournemouth and the conversation changes, at least temporarily. Fail again, particularly with another limp display, and the six-minute defence may soon be remembered as a final public stand rather than the start of a recovery.
At a club of this scale, history is always present, but history does not buy much time. Results do. Carrick knows that better than anyone.
