The management of a quasquicentennial government aided middle school on Manojiappa Street, Thanjavur, awaits the government consent for relocating its premises to a new site.
Inquiries reveal that the 125-years-old school is functioning on a site very close to the Thanjavur Palace Complex and the student strength has dwindled to 35 from around 450 in the past.
As the school building had become weak, a Thanjavur-based social activist filed a PIL before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking directions to the persons concerned to relocate the institution to a safe building. On hearing the plea, the Bench directed the district education authorities to inspect the premises and submit a report about the condition of the buildings. A team of District Education Officials visited the school on October 15 and inspected the buildings.
Meanwhile, school sources said they would shift the institution to a safe building once they receive necessary orders from the School Education Department.
