Commanders’ best WR trade target after Terry McLaurin’s season-ending injury appeared first on ClutchPoints. Add ClutchPoints as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Washington cannot replace Terry McLaurin with one deadline transaction. It can, however, prevent his absence from stripping the offense of its ability to threaten defenses outside. Quentin Johnston offers a combination of availability, explosive potential and acquisition cost.
McLaurin suffered a torn left patellar tendon against San Francisco and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Dan Quinn confirmed Tuesday. That leaves Washington searching for more than additional catches. The Commanders need someone who can create space for the entire passing game.
Johnston should be a target, not an assumed solution. His uneven production makes this a calculated gamble rather than a blockbuster rescue.

Why Johnston makes sense for Washington
Johnston has eight receptions for 165 yards and no touchdowns this season, averaging 20.6 yards per catch. Those numbers reveal both sides of the evaluation: he has generated explosive gains, but he has not supplied dependable weekly production.
His recent catches illustrate the appeal. Johnston recorded a 44-yard reception against Seattle and a 57-yard reception against Kansas City. Washington would be purchasing the possibility of those field-changing plays, not McLaurin’s established reliability.
For Jayden Daniels, an outside receiver capable of threatening deeper areas can discourage defenders from compressing the field. Johnston could contribute through vertical routes, crossing patterns and selected opportunities designed to let him run after the catch.
The Commanders should initially keep his assignment package narrow. Asking a newcomer to absorb every responsibility of their injured captain would create unnecessary friction. A smaller menu would allow Johnston to contribute while building timing with Daniels.
There is also an important limitation: low volume cannot automatically be blamed on opportunity. Washington must evaluate his route execution and catching consistency before deciding that different surroundings will unlock better results.
Why the Chargers could consider selling
The Chargers have lost their first six games. That start creates a reasonable argument for converting uncertain production into future draft capital.
Johnston’s contract adds another layer. Los Angeles exercised his fifth-year option for 2027, reportedly worth approximately $18 million guaranteed. An acquiring team would therefore need to evaluate a meaningful future commitment, not simply a cheap rental.
For Los Angeles, moving that obligation could create flexibility if its internal evaluation no longer supports the investment. Trading Johnston would also open receiving opportunities for players the organization wants to assess.
The counterargument matters. The Chargers would surrender an explosive option and accept that another team might benefit from his development. They should not trade him merely because Washington needs help.
A conditional offer balances the risk
Commanders receive:
- WR Quentin Johnston.
Chargers receive:
- Washington’s 2027 fifth-round pick, escalating to a fourth-round selection if Johnston records at least 500 receiving yards for Washington during the remaining 2026 regular season.
That structure gives the Chargers a guaranteed asset and additional compensation if the acquisition succeeds. Washington avoids surrendering premium draft capital while protecting itself against another stretch of limited production.
The expensive option means the Commanders should insist on that modest starting price. If Los Angeles demands a premium pick without sharing the financial burden, Washington should explore alternatives.
Johnston is the best fit here as an affordable trade asset with upside, not a replacement. The objective is preserving offensive possibilities without turning McLaurin’s injury into a second costly personnel problem.
