The fintech firm can now offer crypto trading in Gibraltar again after obtaining regulatory approval.
Revolut has won approval from Gibraltar regulators to offer cryptocurrency services, according to Finance Magnates Crypto and The Block. The license allows the fintech company to reopen sign-ups for crypto trading to residents of the British overseas territory.
Gibraltar has built a reputation as a crypto-friendly jurisdiction in Europe. Its regulator, the Gibraltar Financial Services Commission, operates a distributed ledger technology framework designed for digital asset firms. Companies that secure authorization there gain a regulated base from which to serve customers both locally and, in some cases, across wider markets.
For Revolut, the license marks a resumption of crypto services that had been unavailable to Gibraltar-based customers. The exact reasons for the earlier gap in service were not detailed in the reporting. Regaining access for local residents restores a feature that many users of digital banking apps now expect as standard.
The Block reported that the license fits into Revolut's larger strategy of international expansion. Revolut has grown from a UK-based money transfer app into a global financial services provider. It now offers banking, trading, and crypto products across numerous jurisdictions. Each new regulatory approval adds to a patchwork of licenses the company has pursued as it scales its crypto business worldwide.
Regulatory approval in a specific jurisdiction like Gibraltar does not automatically extend to other markets. Revolut has had to pursue separate authorizations in different countries as rules around digital assets vary widely. Some regions have tightened oversight of crypto offerings from banks and fintech firms, while others have moved to create clearer licensing pathways. Gibraltar's framework is often cited as one of the more established of these pathways in Europe.
Neither source detailed the specific scope of services Revolut will offer under the Gibraltar license, such as which tokens will be supported or whether institutional clients will have access. The reporting focused on the headline fact of the license approval and its connection to Revolut's expansion plans.
Market Impact
The license gives Revolut a regulated foothold for crypto services in a jurisdiction known for its digital asset framework. This could support further growth of the company's crypto trading business among retail customers in Gibraltar and potentially elsewhere in Europe.
The approval also signals continued regulatory engagement between fintech companies and crypto-friendly jurisdictions. As digital asset rules evolve across different markets, licenses like this one may become a template other fintech firms reference when planning similar international expansion.
Revolut's Gibraltar license restores crypto access for local residents and reflects the company's ongoing push into regulated digital asset markets worldwide.
