NBA Owners Urge Pablo Torre to Investigate LeBron James' Fanatics Deal: Report

Pablo Torre has become a major figure in investigative NBA reporting, exposing questions about how teams and corporate sponsors do business with superstar players.

His biggest investigation began in September 2025, when his podcast, "Pablo Torre Finds Out," revealed that Kawhi Leonard had a $28 million endorsement deal with Aspiration, a company closely tied to Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer. The reporting triggered a league investigation into potential salary-cap circumvention, and a year later, the NBA found that the Clippers had violated league rules, imposing a $30 million fine, stripping them of five first-round picks, and suspending Ballmer for a year.

Now, Torre has been asked by NBA owners to look into another high-profile arrangement: LeBron James' access to a Fanatics helicopter for travel between New York and Philadelphia.

James stunned everybody when he chose to leave the Los Angeles Lakers to join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million deal. It wasn't surprising that he left LA, but that he didn't sign with Cleveland, Miami, or Golden State. Instead, he chose to team up with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe to chase another title in Philly.

But one of the most surprising developments from his decision to join the Sixers was that he wouldn't even be living in Philadelphia. James is reportedly living in New York City and commuting to practices and games in Philly via helicopter. The flights are being covered by Fanatics through an aviation provision in the endorsement deal he signed with the company in 2024.

Flight records showed the helicopter making roughly a dozen trips in one week, with each one-way trip estimated to cost around $4,000 to $10,000.

As we saw with the Leonard investigation, the NBA prohibits teams from using sponsors or business partners to provide players with compensation that circumvents the salary cap. However, James' Fanatics agreement is different in that it predates his contract with the 76ers by more than two years.

No wrongdoing has been established as of this moment, and there is no public confirmation that a formal investigation has been launched.
