Skyscrapers are imposing structures that, like any building, require maintenance and cleaning. That includes the numerous windows on their facades. A window cleaner from Vancouver (Canada) described what it feels like to be hanging at great heights and doing a clearly high-risk job. "It's quite fun. I'm by myself and I listen to a lot of music, mainly country", he admitted on the TikTok channel Daniella_atk.
'This young man got his start as a rock climber, his great passion, and intended to focus his professional career in that direction. In any case, he was not successful. "I started out as a climber and tried to dedicate myself to that to make a living. It’s really not very worth it, so cleaning skyscrapers is the next best thing," he commented humorously during the interview. "I try to stay safe because it’s a dangerous job. Once, a bird pecked me," he joked.'
A shocking video has been released showing the danger to which the Taipei climber exposed himself
The salary of a skyscraper cleaner in Vancouver: $60 an hour
The music and the solitude at great heights motivate him, although so does the salary. In front of the TikTok channel's camera, he has no qualms about detailing his working conditions. "We are paid according to the work we do. We normally earn around 60 (Canadian) dollars an hour," he explained. Let's get out the calculator: at 60 Canadian dollars an hour, with the current exchange rate into euros, this young skyscraper window cleaner could earn around 80,000 euros a year working eight hours a day, five days a week.
Many of the users of the post have expressed surprise at this amount. "$60 an hour? It's time to change professions. I'm not afraid of heights anymore", one can read in the social media comments. On the other hand, looking in Spain for relatively comparable jobs, as a high-rise window cleaner, assuming that a skyscraper is a different setting, we find that the offers propose salaries that do not exceed 24,000 euros gross per year.
