The Seattle Seahawks’ offensive line has been an intriguing unit throughout the year, as it has helped the team get out to a 3-3 start to the season despite some eyebrow-raising statistics, but has maintained its status as one of the better groups at the position in the NFL after six weeks of play, all things taken into account.
Pro Football Focus’ Gordon McGuinness ranked the Seahawks’ offensive line No. 9 overall in their latest O-line rankings and highlighted the team’s performance in its Week 6 loss to the Denver Broncos as the contributing factor for their placement on the list.
”The right side of the Seahawks’ offensive line really struggled in the loss to the DenverBroncos on Thursday,” McGuinness said. “Right tackle Abraham Lucas gave up seven pressures, including a pair of sacks, while the duo of Christian Haynes and Beau Stephens at right guard allowed eight — including a combined four sacks and quarterback hits.”
Seattle has allowed the sixth-most sacks in the NFL this season with 16, putting added pressure on quarterback Sam Darnold and limiting the offense’s ability to establish consistency. Protecting the pocket will remain a priority as the Seahawks look to improve their offensive production.
Right guard Anthony Bradford is working his way back from injury, and his return may provide Seattle with a mixed bag of interior production, as he has had his fair share of down performances over the course of the last two seasons.
Despite the unit’s early level of play, save sacks allowed, it will face an important test in its upcoming matchup against Kansas City.
The Seahawks’ next matchup against the Chiefs presents a difficult challenge. Kansas City’s pass rush will look to exploit protection breakdowns and disrupt Darnold’s timing. Seattle’s ability to contain pressure, limit penalties and establish a clean pocket may prove to be decisive in the contest, while reducing mistakes and improving communication will be essential for the unit.
