October the 21st, 2026 – A project involving cross-border cooperation has seen Velebit positioned as a sustainable tourist destination.
For the Croatian people, the mighty Velebit has always been much more than a rocky mountain rich in flora and fauna and hidden endemics. Marin Smolcic reports for Novi list that this mountain range’s imposing slopes are packed with speleological formations, many of which will never be accessible to human eyes. Apart from hiking enthusiasts, only a few have the privilege of being part of this mythical mountain.
The Public Institution Nature Park Velebit, within the framework of the REVERS project, held a two-day event on the 30th of September and the 1st of October entitled “From Protected Nature to a Sustainable Tourist Experience”. The programme included an international round table at the Cerovačke Caves Centre of Excellence in Gračac and a field tour of the Majstorska cesta (Master’s Road), Tulove grede and the area of the Zrmanja River.
The project was also presented at the “Autumn in Lika” fair in Gospić. This time the event brought together representatives of the public, private and civil sectors from across Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro who work in the fields of nature protection, management of protected areas, tourism, local and regional development and science.
During both days, 30 participants took part each day, which opened space for the exchange of experiences and joint reflection on solutions for the sustainable management of protected areas. There is still a lot of work ahead for the organisers of this project because proud Velebit does not reveal its secrets all at once. This is best known by hikers who, during frequent ascents to the same peak, each time discover a new path, spring or viewpoint of a mountain that is too rich and diverse for us to “consume” it visually at first sight.
