DIBRUGARH, Oct 24: A tea planter from Assam who has spent decades translating the state’s literary and spiritual heritage into Hindi has been selected for the Assam Gaurav Award 2025.
Devi Prasad Bagrodia, 86, was named for the prestigious honour following a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Dispur on October 23. The awards will be presented in December.
Bagrodia’s work has helped introduce Assamese literature to Hindi-speaking readers, with translations of writings by Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Srimanta Sankardev and Madhavdev among his notable contributions.
His journey has also been closely linked to Assam’s tea industry. Born in Chungigaon in Dibrugarh district in 1939, he studied at DHSK College before undergoing training in tea cultivation at the Tocklai Tea Research Centre in Jorhat.
Alongside his work in tea, Bagrodia developed a literary career spanning Assamese, Hindi, English, Bengali and Rajasthani.
He translated Jyotiprasad Agarwala’s writings into Hindi through Jyoti Sudha and Jyotiprabha, and later turned to the devotional works of Sankardev and Madhavdev. His Hindi translation of Sankardev’s Gunamala was published in 2010, followed by translations of Borgeet compositions in 2015 and Madhavdev’s Naamghosha in 2017.
In 2023, he published Gunamala in Hindi alongside the original Assamese text.
Bagrodia has also explored the relationship between Assam’s tea estates and its cultural history. His 2019 book, Jyoti Prasad, Ancestors, examines the ancestral connections of Jyotiprasad Agarwala with Tamulbari Tea Estate. His writings include Chah Gosor Kolom, a work reflecting his interest in tea cultivation.
His literary contributions have earned him several honours, including the Assam government’s Literary Award for 2009–10 and the Basudev Jalan Smriti Award from Asam Sahitya Sabha in 2022.
The Assam Gaurav recognition acknowledges Bagrodia’s contribution to translation and cultural preservation, particularly his efforts to make Assam’s literary and spiritual traditions accessible to readers beyond the Assamese-speaking community.
