The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) has reaffirmed its support for Nigeria’s response to the Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak, stressing the importance of surveillance and contact tracing in preventing further transmission.
The agency said identifying and monitoring contacts of confirmed cases remained critical to breaking chains of transmission and preventing the virus from spreading into wider communities.
As part of ongoing preparedness and response efforts, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), with support from partners, trained health workers from Abuja’s area councils in contact tracing.
“Early detection saves lives, protects health workers and families, and stops the virus before it reaches the wider community,” Africa CDC said.
The agency added that it remained committed to supporting a coordinated, country-led response under the leadership of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC).
The emphasis on surveillance and contact tracing comes as Nigeria intensifies efforts to contain the outbreak, strengthen infection prevention and control, and protect frontline health workers and communities.
Africa CDC reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria and its partners in containing the outbreak through coordinated public health interventions.
