The Nigeria National League (NNL) has expressed deep condolences to Crown FC of Ogbomoso following the death of its team driver, Yinusa Popoola Amole, popularly known as Olaloomi, in a road accident involving the club’s travelling party on its way to Ogun State for a pre-season tournament.
The accident, which occurred on Thursday, reportedly involved the club’s Toyota Coaster bus and a trailer near the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) area. The team was travelling to Ijebu-Ode to participate in the AFH Pre-Season Tournament at Ebedei Stadium ahead of its opening fixture against Heartland FC. Blueprint reports
The crash left the driver with serious injuries, while some players and officials also sustained injuries and were taken for medical attention. Popoola, however, later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by a medical doctor in Ogbomoso, according to reports on the incident.
The tragedy has plunged the Oyo State-owned club into mourning and renewed concerns about the safety of football teams travelling by road to fulfil their sporting commitments.
NNL Chief Operating Officer, Danlami Alanana, described the incident as sad and tragic, extending the league’s condolences to the Oyo State Government, the club’s management, players, technical crew, supporters and, particularly, the immediate family of the deceased.
“This is a painful and irreparable loss, not only to his immediate family and Crown FC, but also to the entire football fraternity,” Alanana said.
He prayed that Almighty God would forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and grant his soul eternal rest.
The NNL official also prayed for God to grant Popoola’s wife and children the strength and fortitude to bear the loss, describing the death as a painful setback for the club and the wider football community.
Two decades of service to Crown FC
Popoola’s death carries particular significance for Crown FC because of his longstanding service to the club.
The late driver had served the Ogbomoso-based team for more than two decades, becoming part of the personnel responsible for supporting its operations and facilitating the movement of players and officials to training sessions, matches and other football engagements.
His years of service meant that he had witnessed different phases of the club’s journey, working behind the scenes as generations of players and officials came and went.
Although football attention is often concentrated on players, coaches and administrators, team drivers and other support staff play an essential role in ensuring that clubs meet their sporting commitments, particularly in a league where teams frequently undertake long journeys between cities.
For Crown FC, the loss therefore extends beyond the death of a staff member in a road accident. It is the loss of a familiar figure who devoted a substantial part of his working life to the club.
The incident also comes at a sensitive time for the team, which was travelling to participate in a pre-season tournament intended to provide competitive preparation ahead of the new campaign.
While the club initially reported that no casualty had been recorded at the time of its first statement, subsequent information confirmed that Popoola had died from the injuries he sustained.
The club also expressed concern for the injured members of the travelling party and called on supporters and the public to avoid circulating unverified information about the incident.
Further details concerning the precise circumstances of the collision and the condition of the injured players and officials were not immediately available.
Crown FC’s latest tragedy recalls earlier road accidents
The death of Popoola has brought back memories of previous road accidents involving Nigerian football clubs, including incidents that claimed the lives of players and left others injured.
One of the most painful episodes in Crown FC’s history occurred in January 2017, when the club lost midfielder Samson Folorunso in a road crash on the Oyo-Ogbomoso Road.
Reports at the time said Folorunso was travelling in a commercial bus with other passengers when the driver reportedly lost control while attempting to avoid a head-on collision with an articulated truck. The vehicle plunged into the Odo-Oba River.
The accident reportedly claimed 12 lives, including Folorunso, while another Crown FC player, Samson Alo, survived.
The incident sent shock waves through the club, with teammates and officials said to have been devastated by the midfielder’s death. The Oyo State Government, which owns Crown FC, also expressed sadness over the loss.
Nearly a decade later, the club is again mourning a member of its travelling contingent following a fatal road accident. Although the circumstances of the two incidents differ, both illustrate the human cost of road crashes on football communities.
Enugu Rangers lost two players in 2020 crash
Another devastating incident occurred in March 2020 when Enugu Rangers players Ifeanyi George and Emmanuel Ogbu died in a road accident while travelling towards Lagos.
George, a forward who had represented the club in the Nigeria Professional Football League, was travelling with Ogbu when their vehicle crashed along the Benin-Agbor Road. Another player, who was also in the vehicle, survived with injuries.
The accident occurred during a break in league activities caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The deaths shocked the Nigerian football community, prompting tributes to the players from clubs, supporters and football stakeholders.
George’s death was particularly painful for Rangers, where he had been an important member of the squad. His passing, alongside that of Ogbu, underscored how road accidents can abruptly end promising careers and leave clubs, families and teammates struggling to cope with sudden loss.
The tragedy also demonstrated that the risks associated with football travel are not limited to official team buses. Players travelling in private vehicles during breaks or between club commitments can also face serious dangers on Nigeria’s highways.
Doma United, Rivers United and other clubs have had close calls
Not every road accident involving a Nigerian football team has resulted in fatalities, but several incidents have exposed players and officials to serious danger.
In June 2024, the team bus of Doma United was involved in an accident along the Makurdi-Lafia Expressway in Benue State. Reports said the vehicle lost control and somersaulted, leaving several players injured. No deaths were reported in that incident.
In June 2026, players and officials of Rivers United escaped serious injury when their team bus was involved in an accident along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road near Port Harcourt.
The club was travelling to Awka, Anambra State, for a President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United. Rivers United confirmed that some members of the travelling party sustained minor injuries, but there were no fatalities or life-threatening cases reported.
Earlier, in September 2017, six players of FC Ifeanyi Ubah sustained varying degrees of injuries when the club’s bus was involved in an accident along the Benin-Ore Expressway while travelling to Ijebu-Ode for a league fixture against Sunshine Stars.
Two of the injured players, who had initially been unconscious, reportedly regained consciousness and received medical treatment.
These incidents illustrate the recurring exposure of Nigerian football teams to road hazards while travelling for league matches, cup competitions and pre-season tournaments. They also demonstrate why the welfare of players and support personnel must remain a priority for club administrators and football authorities.
A wider concern for football authorities
The latest accident involving Crown FC raises broader questions about road safety arrangements for professional football teams in Nigeria.
Domestic competitions require clubs to travel across considerable distances, often under tight schedules determined by fixture calendars. Depending on their locations and available resources, teams may spend several hours on highways to reach match venues.
Such journeys place responsibilities on clubs to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy, drivers are adequately rested and qualified, and travel schedules allow sufficient time for safe movement.
Football administrators also have a role to play in examining whether existing travel arrangements adequately protect players, coaches and other staff. Where necessary, clubs and league organisers can review transport standards, journey planning and emergency response procedures to reduce preventable risks.
However, the precise cause of the Crown FC accident has not been established in the information made available, and no conclusion should be drawn about responsibility without the findings of the appropriate authorities.
The immediate priorities remain the welfare and recovery of the injured members of the travelling party, support for Popoola’s bereaved family and a clear account of the circumstances surrounding the collision.
For Crown FC, the death of a driver who served the club for more than 20 years is a profound loss. For Nigerian football more broadly, it is another reminder that the people who make the game possible away from the pitch deserve the same attention to their safety and welfare as those who play it.
As the NNL mourns alongside Crown FC, the hope is that the tragedy will prompt renewed attention to the safety of football teams on the road and measures that can help prevent similar losses in the future.
