The minimalist manicure has reigned supreme all summer, and now we're seeing it evolve as we head into moodier autumn months. Cue the milk manicure: a watery, creamy shade designed to elevate natural nails, as seen on Céline Dion below. A true devotee of the minimalist nail trend, the singer took to the streets of Paris with a silky, polished manicure, proving that a short, quiet-luxury approach to nails can still make a lasting statement.
"The milk manicure is an iteration of the trending translucent manicures that have become a staple look of the 'clean girl' aesthetic and more minimalistic mani that has been super popular for the past few seasons," says session manicurist Ami Streets, who has worked on the likes of Carey Mulligan and Daisy Edgar-Jones. "A semi-sheer white polish is used to paint a soft and subtle wash of color, emulating the appearance and opacity of milk."

She explains that precise preparation is integral to this look, ensuring the nail plate surface is clean, shaped, and buffed to perfection. This lets the color apply smoothly and evenly across the nail, free of flakes and streaks.
"A good, even painting technique is also imperative when applying sheer shades in either gel or regular polish," she says. "Always start with a base coat, and when adding color, use the three-stroke painting technique (apply center, then each side in one application to evenly distribute the product). Two thin coats of a sheer polish color should give the perfect consistency to achieve the milky mani look."
