- French authorities confirmed the cause of death of Lions rugby player Hyron Andrews following an autopsy
- The autopsy report pointed to a specific underlying condition that increased Andrews' risk of a fatal tear in his aorta
- Doctors say the condition can strike without warning and is not exclusive to older adults
French authorities confirmed through an autopsy that Lions rugby player Hyron Andrews, 31, died from an aortic dissection while on tour with the 10bet Lions ahead of their Investec Champions Cup and Vodacom United Rugby Championship fixtures.

The Lions Rugby Company released the findings on behalf of the Andrews family. According to the autopsy report, the dissection most likely developed on an aortic aneurysm, with the tear resulting in a significant build-up of blood in the sac surrounding the heart.
What an aortic dissection does to the body
According to a report on IOL, the aorta is the body's largest artery, responsible for carrying oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Its wall is made up of three layers. When the innermost layer tears, blood can force its way between those layers, creating a false channel that restricts flow to vital organs. In severe cases, the outer layer ruptures, triggering life-threatening internal bleeding.
When a dissection affects the ascending aorta, the section nearest the heart, it is considered especially dangerous. Blood can accumulate around the heart, impairing its ability to pump effectively. Dissections in this region typically require emergency surgery.
Andrews' autopsy indicated that the dissection occurred on an aortic aneurysm, which is an abnormal bulge caused by a weakened section of the artery wall. Not every dissection is linked to a known aneurysm, and underlying causes are not always identifiable.
Established risk factors for the condition include long-term high blood pressure, smoking, high cholesterol, a family history of aortic disease, and inherited connective-tissue disorders such as Marfan syndrome. While diagnoses most commonly occur in men between the ages of 50 and 70, younger individuals with certain risk factors can also be affected.

Recognising the warning signs
Aortic dissection can develop and progress rapidly. The most recognisable warning sign is a sudden, severe pain in the chest or back, often described as a tearing or ripping sensation, which may spread to the abdomen.
Other symptoms include shortness of breath, fainting, sudden weakness or numbness, difficulty speaking, and a difference in blood pressure or pulse between the arms. Some presentations resemble a heart attack or stroke.
Medical professionals stress that anyone experiencing sudden, severe chest or back pain alongside symptoms such as fainting or breathing difficulties should seek emergency care without delay. Treatment delays significantly increase the risk of death.
Although no preventive measure eliminates all risk, controlling blood pressure, quitting smoking, managing cholesterol, and knowing one's family history are among the steps that can help reduce the likelihood of serious complications. Screening is recommended for individuals with a family history of thoracic aortic disease or inherited conditions associated with aortic complications.
The available autopsy findings do not establish whether Andrews experienced warning symptoms before his death or whether the outcome could have been prevented.
